“Well-being is influenced by such a vast spectrum of factors. We are part of a university space that, like most schools, focuses on academics, accomplishments, and success.

Don’t get me wrong, school is a high priority—it’s ultimately why most of us are here. It’s the extent to which we go to maintain being a 'successful' student that can be a hindrance to our own health and well-being.

Juggling academics, work, financial responsibilities, social relationships, personal adversities, and life in general all while trying to eat healthy, get regular exercise, sleep well, take care of your mental health? And not be stressed?

Even with all the help campus resources already offer, students are struggling. Our renewed focus on well-being is so important, because it’s planting seeds to embed health and wellness into campus culture, prioritizing them alongside—or even above—academic success and accomplishments.

It’s a systemic change in response to a systemic issue, and it sends the valuable message that we are people before we are students. I hope that message sticks.”

“I am grateful for the University of Iowa’s commitment to helping students succeed academically by prioritizing well-being.

Faculty genuinely care about their students' well-being and understand the impact it has on our academic and personal lives. They create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable discussing their concerns and seeking guidance.

Student Wellness provides some of my favorite services, like fitness and nutrition consultations. Moreover, the university fosters a sense of community and belonging, which has allowed my well-being to thrive. With all these resources and support services I know I am not alone.”

“Having the opportunity to serve as a Wellness Ambassador at the University of Iowa is something I am very passionate about.

LiveWELL provides many top-notch programs to faculty, staff, and the campus community, and I am proud to bring wellness programs to life at the department level within Finance and Operations. These programs help us boost our energy levels, enjoy more productive days, and ultimately feel better.

As a staff member, I personally enjoy taking advantage of the wellness options by completing my personal health assessment, earning monthly liveWELL points by engaging in health-related activities, and learning from liveWELL trainings like Be Kind to Your Mind. When we take care of ourselves, we are at our best!”
